Healer
/ healer /gaming term
A healer is a team role focused on restoring team-mates’ health and keeping the group alive during fights.
A healer’s main job is to keep team-mates alive. Healers use abilities that restore health, prevent damage, remove harmful effects or bring defeated players back into the fight. In the classic trio of team roles – tank, healer and DPS – the healer is the safety net that lets everyone else take risks.
How healing works in practice
Healers watch the health bars of the whole team, deciding who needs help most and when. Different games use different approaches. Some rely on reactive healing, restoring health after damage arrives. Others reward preventive play, such as shields placed before a big attack. Healers often manage a limited resource, like mana or energy, so they must heal efficiently rather than constantly.
Healers also contribute in other ways: dealing damage when the group is healthy, applying buffs or controlling enemies. Many games blur the line between healers and the broader support role.
Why healing can be demanding
Healing requires constant attention to team-mates rather than enemies, which can be a very different way of playing. When a group fails, healers sometimes get blamed, even when the cause lay elsewhere. That pressure is one reason healers, like tanks, are often in short supply in group-finding queues.
Healing is also very rewarding. Turning a disastrous fight around with well-timed healing is one of the most satisfying feelings in team games, and good healers are valued and remembered by their groups.
Tips for new healers
Position yourself where you can see the whole team but stay out of danger. Learn the big attacks in each fight so you can prepare for them. Do not try to keep everyone at full health all the time; focus on the people in real danger. And if others criticise unfairly, remember that healing is a team effort, and muting is always available.
