F2P
/ f2p /free-to-playgaming term
Free-to-play games cost nothing to download and play, and usually make money through optional in-game purchases.
A free-to-play game, often shortened to F2P, can be downloaded and played without paying. Instead of charging for the game itself, the developer earns money from players who choose to spend inside it – on cosmetic items, battle passes, currency, time-savers, characters or random rewards. Some free-to-play games also show adverts, particularly on mobile.
The related word “freemium” combines free and premium, describing the same model where the base is free and extras cost money.
Different flavours of free
Free-to-play games vary widely in how fair they feel. At one end are games where purchases are purely cosmetic, so non-paying players have the same experience apart from appearance. In the middle are games that sell convenience, letting you skip waiting or repetitive tasks. At the far end are games where purchases give significant advantages, which players call pay-to-win. Many games sit somewhere in between, and the balance can change with updates.
Why the model works
Removing the price barrier lets huge numbers of people try a game, which is especially important for multiplayer games that need busy servers. Revenue then comes from the players who choose to spend, and in many games they are a minority. That is why free games are often designed carefully to encourage spending – through limited-time offers, attractive bundles and progression that feels slow without help.
What families should look at
“Free” describes the entry price, not the total cost. Before downloading, check the PEGI rating and whether it lists in-game purchases or paid random items. Set up spending controls on the device first, rather than after the first surprise bill. Ask About Games provides parental control guides for each major platform. Many free-to-play games are genuinely enjoyable without spending a penny, and agreeing that from the start avoids pressure later.
