Whale
/ whale /gaming term
In games, a whale is a player who spends a very large amount of real money on in-game purchases.
A whale is a player who spends a lot of money in a free-to-play or microtransaction-heavy game – far more than the average player. The word is used by players, sometimes jokingly about themselves, and it also appears in industry discussion of how games make money. Lighter spenders are sometimes called dolphins, and very small spenders minnows, though these terms are less common.
Why whales matter to game design
In many free-to-play games, most players spend little or nothing, so a smaller group of high spenders can account for a large share of revenue. That makes high-spending players commercially very important. Critics argue that some games are designed around them – with expensive bundles, limited-time offers and random rewards with very low odds – rather than around the experience of ordinary players.
In competitive games, whales can also affect others directly: if purchases provide power, heavy spenders may dominate leaderboards. That is one reason the term appears often in discussions of pay-to-win design.
A word to use with care
Calling someone a whale can be light-hearted, but heavy spending is not always a free choice. For some people it can become a problem that affects finances and wellbeing. If you or someone you know feels unable to control spending on games, the NHS page on help for problems with gambling lists free support, including the National Gambling Helpline run by GamCare, particularly where spending involves paid random items.
What parents should know
Children can become high spenders without realising how much they have spent, especially when payments go through a saved card or premium currency. Regularly checking purchase history on the console, phone or store account, and using spending limits, prevents surprises. Most platforms have processes for requesting refunds of unauthorised purchases by children, so contact them promptly if this happens.
