Upscaling
/ upscaling /gaming term
Upscaling renders a game at a lower resolution and then enlarges the image to fit a higher-resolution screen, saving performance.
Drawing every pixel of a 4K image many times a second takes a lot of processing power. Upscaling saves effort by rendering the game at a lower resolution and then enlarging the result to the screen’s full resolution. Done crudely, this makes the picture look soft or blurry. Modern upscaling techniques are much smarter, using information from previous frames, motion data and, in some cases, machine-learning models to reconstruct detail so the final image looks close to native resolution.
Common forms
The major graphics hardware makers each offer their own upscaling technologies, and many games support several of them; you will see them listed by name in PC graphics menus. Consoles also use upscaling widely, often automatically. Many games additionally use dynamic resolution, which lowers rendering resolution during demanding moments to keep the frame rate steady, then raises it again when things calm down.
Some newer technologies go further with frame generation, creating additional in-between frames to increase smoothness. This can make motion look more fluid, but because the extra frames are generated rather than produced from your inputs, it does not reduce input lag in the same way a genuinely higher frame rate does.
Quality settings
Upscalers usually offer presets with names like Quality, Balanced and Performance. Quality renders at a higher internal resolution for a sharper picture; Performance renders lower for higher frame rates. The best choice depends on your screen size, how close you sit and how demanding the game is.
What to watch for
Upscaling can sometimes produce small visual flaws, such as shimmering on fine details or faint trails behind fast-moving objects. If something looks odd, try a different upscaler or preset. For many players, though, upscaling is the most effective way to get smoother performance from existing hardware without buying anything new.
