Remaster

/ remaster /gaming term

A remaster is an updated re-release of an existing game with improved graphics, sound or performance but largely the same design.

A remaster takes an existing game and polishes it for modern hardware. Typical improvements include higher resolution, sharper textures, better lighting, a smoother frame rate, reworked sound and support for newer controllers or widescreen displays. The levels, story and gameplay usually stay much the same, so it feels like the original but cleaner.

Remaster, remake, reboot and port

These words are often confused. A remake rebuilds a game largely from scratch, frequently with new graphics, rethought controls and sometimes changed or expanded content, while aiming to tell the same story. A reboot restarts a series with a new take on its characters or world. A port moves a game to a different platform with minimal changes. A “definitive” or “complete” edition typically bundles a game with all its DLC and may include remaster-style improvements. Publishers do not always use these labels consistently, so the description matters more than the name.

Why remasters are popular

Remasters let new players experience older games that might otherwise be hard to obtain or uncomfortable to play on modern televisions. For those who played the original, they offer nostalgia with fewer rough edges. Critics sometimes feel remasters are priced too high for the work involved, or that changes to the art style lose something that made the original special.

Before you buy

Check whether you already own the original on the same platform: some remasters are offered as a cheaper upgrade. Look at the store page for a clear list of changes. For parents, it is worth checking the age rating of the new release, as ratings can differ from the original’s, particularly if content or online features have been added.

Used in a sentence

“The remaster plays exactly the same, but it runs at 60 frames and the text is finally readable on our TV.”
