Meta
/ meta /gaming term
The meta is the set of strategies, characters and equipment that players currently consider most effective in a game.
In gaming, “the meta” describes the most popular and effective way to play at a given moment: which characters are being picked, which weapons are favoured, which tactics win matches. It comes from “metagame”, the idea of a game above the game – the strategic thinking players do about how everyone else is likely to play.
A common joke expands meta as “most effective tactics available”, but that is a backronym invented later rather than the real source of the word.
How the meta forms and shifts
Metas emerge from millions of players experimenting, then copying what works. Professional players, streamers and guides speed this up, because a strategy seen winning at a high level spreads quickly. The meta then changes when developers release balance updates, add new content, or when players discover a counter to the dominant approach. A period where one option rules unchallenged is often described as a stale meta.
Choosing something outside the popular set is called going “off-meta”. It can be surprisingly effective, because opponents are less prepared for it, but it usually demands more skill.
Meta versus fun
Many players feel pressure to follow the meta, especially in ranked modes where winning matters. For casual play, that pressure is mostly unnecessary. At lower and middle skill levels, understanding the basics and working with your team usually matter more than picking the strongest option. Some players deliberately play off-meta simply because it is more interesting.
A sensible approach
New players can use the meta as a learning tool: copying a popular setup shows what works and why. But it is worth knowing the meta is temporary. Parents may notice a child suddenly wanting a different character or item “because it’s meta now” – a sign of a recent update rather than a need to buy anything.
Used in a sentence
“Since the update, the meta is all about fast, aggressive teams – slow defensive play just loses.”
