Noob

/ noob /gaming term

A noob is a beginner, though the word is often used as an insult for someone who plays badly.

“Noob” describes a new or inexperienced player. It developed from “newbie”, shortened to “newb” and then respelt to match how it sounds. You will also see stylised spellings such as “n00b” with zeros.

The word has two tones. Some players draw a distinction: a newbie or newb is simply new and willing to learn, while a noob is someone who plays poorly and will not improve. In practice, many people use the words interchangeably, and context and tone decide whether it is friendly or unkind.

Friendly and unfriendly uses

Among friends, noob is often affectionate teasing – “you absolute noob” after a silly mistake, said with a laugh. Players also use it about themselves: “sorry, total noob here, how does crafting work?” is a common and usually well-received way to ask for help. Used against strangers, though, it can be an insult, particularly in competitive games where frustration runs high.

Related terms include “noob-friendly”, meaning a game or guide that suits beginners, and “noob trap”, an option that looks good to new players but is actually weak.

Being new is normal

Every experienced player started as a beginner. Many games now have tutorials, practice modes and beginner-only matchmaking to help new players learn without being overwhelmed. If you are new, saying so politely tends to bring out the helpful side of a community, and choosing co-operative or beginner modes first reduces the chance of meeting impatient players.

When “noob” turns into name-calling

Hearing a child called a noob online is common and usually mild, but persistent name-calling is a different matter. If it becomes upsetting, every major platform has tools to mute, block and report other players, and turning off voice chat with strangers is a simple step. Ask About Games has guides on setting these controls. It can also help to talk about how to respond – ignoring and muting is usually more effective than arguing back.

Used in a sentence

“I’m a complete noob at this game – which character should I start with?”
