New Game Plus

/ new game plus /gaming term

New Game Plus is a mode that lets you replay a finished game from the start while keeping some of your items, levels or abilities.

New Game Plus, usually written NG+, appears after you complete a game. It lets you start the story again from the beginning while carrying over some of what you earned: your character’s level, equipment, money, or unlocked abilities. To keep things interesting, many games also raise the difficulty, add new enemies or include extra story details on the second playthrough.

The term was coined in the 1995 role-playing game Chrono Trigger, which offered the option after completion. The idea has since spread widely, especially in role-playing and action games.

What changes on a second run

Implementations vary a lot. Some NG+ modes are simply the same game with a stronger hero, giving a relaxed victory lap. Others scale enemies upwards so the challenge stays fair, sometimes in several tiers labelled NG++ or higher. Story-heavy games occasionally use NG+ to unlock different endings, extra scenes or dialogue that only make sense once you know how events turn out.

Players also use NG+ to try a different build, because carried-over resources make experimenting cheaper, or to finish collecting items they missed the first time.

Is it worth it?

For a game you loved, New Game Plus is an easy way to get more out of the same purchase. Before starting, check whether it uses a separate save slot; most do, but it is worth confirming so a completed save is not overwritten. If a game you are considering lists NG+ among its features, that usually signals the developers expect it to be replayed. Some games also unlock harder difficulty settings, extra costumes or bonus modes on completion, so look through the menus after the credits roll even if you do not want a full second run.
