Permadeath
/ permadeath /gaming term
Permadeath means that when your character dies, they are gone for good and you must start again.
In most games, defeat is temporary: you reload a save or respawn and try again. Permadeath removes that safety net. When your character dies, that character – and often all the progress tied to them – is lost permanently. You begin a fresh attempt, usually called a run.
Permadeath is a defining feature of roguelike games, the genre named after Rogue (1980), which built randomly arranged dungeons each time you played. Because the layout changed with every attempt, losing a character did not mean replaying identical content, and permadeath became part of the appeal rather than a punishment.
Different flavours of permanent loss
Strict permadeath wipes everything. Many modern games soften it: you lose the current run, but keep some unlocks or currency that make future attempts a little easier. Games built this way are often called roguelites. Other titles offer permadeath as an optional setting, sometimes labelled hardcore or ironman, for players who want every decision to carry weight. In squad-based strategy games, permadeath may apply to individual soldiers while the campaign continues.
Because the stakes are higher, many players find permadeath makes ordinary moments tense and memorable. It also discourages save scumming, since the game often saves automatically and allows only one save file.
Is it frustrating for beginners?
It can be, so check whether a game uses permadeath before buying for a younger player. That said, these games are usually designed around short runs of twenty minutes to an hour, and losing is expected. Talking about each run as practice rather than failure helps. Optional permadeath can usually be switched off at the start of a new game. If a younger player finds it upsetting, games with a gentler mode or a roguelite structure, where something carries over between runs, are a softer introduction to the idea.
