Mod

/ mod /gaming term

A mod is a modification made by players that changes or adds to a game, from small tweaks to entire new games.

Mod is short for modification. Mods are made by players, not usually by the game’s developers, and change something about a game. They range from small tweaks – a better map, a fixed bug, a new outfit, a more readable interface – to huge projects that add new stories, characters and areas, or turn a game into something entirely different. People who make mods are called modders, and the activity is modding.

How mods are shared

Some games officially support mods, with built-in tools and in-game browsers to find and install them. PC games have the richest mod scenes, often hosted on dedicated mod websites or within a store’s community features. Console games occasionally support a curated selection of mods. A collection of mods designed to work together is called a mod pack.

Modding has shaped the industry: Counter-Strike began as a mod, and the multiplayer online battle arena genre grew out of mods for the strategy games StarCraft and Warcraft III.

What mods can do – and the catches

Mods can extend a game’s life for years, fix problems the developer never addressed and improve accessibility, for example by adding larger text or colour-blind options. But they come with risks:

  • Mods from unofficial sources can contain malware. Stick to the game’s official mod support or well-established, reputable mod sites.
  • Mods can break after updates or corrupt save files, so back up saves first.
  • Mods that give advantages in online multiplayer usually count as cheating and can lead to bans.
  • Mods are not age-rated, so content may differ from the original game’s rating.

Installing a first mod together

If a child wants to install mods, it is worth sitting with them the first time to check where mods come from and what they contain. Built-in mod browsers inside a game are usually the safest starting point. Keeping security software up to date on a family PC is also sensible.

Used in a sentence

“I installed a mod that adds a map marker for every hidden chest.”
